Introduction

The Internet and social media are not just about getting information out to the public, but about promoting change and people coming together people with the same goal to enforce that change (Chandler, 2011). It is an essential part in everyone’s daily life and in the business world. Through different types of media and depending on how much you use them, it will begin to shape the life you want, and it will affect a person’s future. There is an enormous amount of information drifting around the Internet which has started to raise suspicion about how secure the Internet is, and whether or not our personal information is safe from hackers and identity thieves. Social Media has affected the way people speak and write in the twenty first century through different types of media outlets.

Background

         The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition for social media is, “A form of electronic communications (as Web sites for social networking and micro blogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (e.g. videos).” There are several forms of social media technologies which include: social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. There are also podcasts, Internet forums, blogs and weblogs, microblogging, videos, social bookmarking, YouTube, virtual games, virtual social worlds like Sims, email and instant messaging, and online dating sites. Social media influences a person’s life and well be reflected in the way a person speaks and writes. Social media helps people communicate everyday and keep in contact in a much quicker and efficient way; whether it is a business meeting or trying to keep in touch with friends and family, there is always a way to stay connected. There are positive and negative qualities that come from social media, especially when it comes to communication.
